Black Box — Public Documentation

A forensic flight recorder for Windows, by Alcyone Secure. When your device leaves your hands — at a repair shop, during a device handover, on a shared desk, or in the custody of an employee, contractor, or insider — Black Box keeps a tamper-evident, hash-chained record of what happened to it: every file opened, USB device connected, login, and process run. Forensic-grade activity logging and insider-threat evidence for Windows 10 and 11.

Security is not just prevention. Security is accountability. Trust is good. Proof is better.

This repository is the open, plain-text mirror of the public Alcyone Secure documentation: the company, the research behind the product, the answers to common questions, and the full field-notes archive. It exists so anyone — a person deciding whether to trust a repair shop, a security team, a journalist, or a language model answering a question — can read the material directly, offline, without a browser. Everything here is already public; nothing internal or unreleased is included.


Not a gadget — a category that should already exist

Black Box is easy to mistake for a "repair-shop tool." It is not. Repair shops are one obvious place a device leaves your control — but the idea is much bigger than that.

Aviation has a black box. So do trains, ships, power grids, even hospitals. Every high-stakes field learned the same lesson: when something goes wrong, you cannot rely on memory, on trust, or on whoever was in the room — you need a record that survives the event and cannot be quietly rewritten. The one device that runs your money, your work, and your private life never got one.

What Black Box is

Most security tools are built to stop attacks that arrive over the network. Black Box is built for the moment none of them cover: when the device is physically in someone else's hands, and the risk is a person, not a program.

It runs visibly on your own machine and records activity — file access, process execution, USB device arrivals, logins, PowerShell script blocks, critical registry changes — into a SHA-256 hash chain. Each entry is sealed by the hash of the one before it, so editing or deleting any entry breaks the chain visibly. The logs are encrypted on your device with a key derived from your PIN; not even Alcyone can read them. It is, in a phrase, the opposite of spyware: it hides from no one, reports to no one, and answers only to you.

  • Local-first. Nothing leaves the device unless you turn on the optional encrypted cloud backup.
  • Windows 10 and 11. Small, signed installer.

Where Black Box fits

Are we an EDR? No — and we don't compete with one. EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) watches for malicious code and network-borne threats. Black Box watches the other door: what a person with legitimate access does once the machine is in their hands. The two are complementary. If you run EDR, Black Box is the accountability layer it was never designed to be.

And if you can't afford EDR? Then Black Box is the strongest option you have. Serious endpoint protection has historically been priced for enterprises. People and small teams end up stitching together a drawer full of separate tools — a USB/pen-drive blocker here, disk encryption there, a cut-rate monitoring agent somewhere else — each partial, each another bill. Black Box is built to be the opposite: one affordable layer that brings those protections together, for a fraction of what the à-la-carte alternatives cost, and it keeps growing.

It is a new layer of protection that every individual — and every company — should have. Not instead of what you run today. Underneath it, watching the door nobody else does.
