CVE-2025-54988 - Apache Tika XFA XML External Entity injection through the Elasticsearch ingest-attachment processor

  • Impact: arbitrary local file read and server-side requests with the privileges of the Elasticsearch process
  • Exploitation: crafted in-memory PDF submitted through a temporary ingest pipeline and the _simulate API
  • Validated: Elasticsearch 8.19.2 vulnerable / Elasticsearch 8.19.3 patched
  • Apache later assigned CVE-2025-66516 to the same underlying vulnerability to expand the affected-package scope
  • Includes a standalone Python PoC and a Metasploit auxiliary module
