On host machine:

/VirtualBox-7.2.10-174163-Linux_amd64.run
Verifying archive integrity... 100% SHA256 checksums are OK. 100% MD5 checksums are OK. All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox for Linux installation 100%
VirtualBox Version 7.2.10 r174163 (2026-06-11T14:05:12Z) installer
Removing previous installation of VirtualBox 7.2.10 r174163 from /opt/VirtualBox
Installing VirtualBox to /opt/VirtualBox
Python found: python3.9, installing bindings...
vboxdrv.sh: failed: Look at /var/log/vbox-setup.log to find out what went wrong.

How can we reproduce this?

rerun "*.run" file or "/sbin/vboxconfig"

This has been going on for a while and it started with RHEL 9.8 kernel 5.14.0-687.19.1.el9_8
Based on what has been discussed here #732 there seem to be a solution, but it has to be implemented in the next VirtualBox release, for those who don't compile their own kernel or don't want to play with that.

Right. That was the patch that had issues with cr+lf endings. I didn't get a "good feeling" about the purported "patch" or I would have tried ir.

Downloaded (Oracle VirtualBox) [Linux EL9 64-bit] 7.2.x revision 174504] test build onto linux 9.8.
Then finding "/usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/vboxdrv/r0drv/linux/fileio-r0drv-linux.c" and changing line 159,
"..... || RTLNX+RHEL_RANGE(9,9 9,99)" to
"..... || RTLNX+RHEL_RANGE(9,8 9,99)"
allowed the test build version to successfully build the Kernel Modules and "VirtualBox 7.2.97 r174497" is now operational. Haven't taken care of Guest Additions yet.

Installed VirtualBox-7.2-7.2.13_174504_el9-1.x86_64.rpm on the host.

Tested with the following kernels, and kernel modules don't build by default:
5.14.0-687.26.1.el9_8.x86_64
5.14.0-687.25.1.el9_8.x86_64

I can confirm that editing "/usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/vboxdrv/r0drv/linux/fileio-r0drv-linux.c" and changing line 159,
"..... || RTLNX+RHEL_RANGE(9,9 9,99)" to
"..... || RTLNX+RHEL_RANGE(9,8 9,99)"
solves the issue.

VBoxGuestAddtions-7.2.97 compilation failed (in guest Linux-9.8):

Couldn't find anything relative in dmesg output.

For the "record" host Linux is 5.14.0-9.8-687-26.1.el9_8 and guest Linux is 5.14.0-98-687-20.1.el9.8

/usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/vboxdrv/r0drv/linux/fileio-r0drv-linux.c doesnt even have a single RHEL_RANGE..

@alexisfrjp what kernel version are you running?
You need to run the kernel version you want to use [eg. 5.14.0-687.26.1.el9_8.x86_64) and then you will see RHEL_RANGE.
Older version wouldn't show you that [e.g. xx.17.xx doesn't show it]
