here is my plus claude's vote on how we should address this issue

Migrate example notebooks into the rendered docs

Goal: rendered notebooks should live only inside the docs build. Render
example/tutorial notebooks as doc pages; strip outputs from any .ipynb left in notebooks/.

Why now: docs use myst_parser only — no myst-nb/nbsphinx, so notebooks
can't render today. Most notebooks in notebooks/ are also stale (old pre-unification
API / un-namespaced mag_g columns); multisurvey_phases_demo.ipynb is current.

Approach: use myst-nb with nb_execution_mode = "off" — notebooks are
executed locally and committed with their outputs, and the docs build just renders
those stored outputs (no ugali/survey data needed in CI). The nbstripout rule
below therefore applies to leftover notebooks/, not to the example notebooks
moved under docs/.

Tasks:

• Add myst-nb to conf.py extensions (replaces myst_parser) + docs/requirements.txt;
  set nb_execution_mode = "off".
• Add a docs/source/examples/ section to the toctree.
• Move example/tutorial notebooks there, update them to the current API
  (unified StreamInjector, survey_bands/bands, namespaced
  <survey>_<band>_{true,obs,err} columns), then run them once so committed
  outputs are current.
• Strip outputs from / remove leftover notebooks/*.ipynb; add an nbstripout
  pre-commit hook scoped to notebooks/ (exclude docs/).
• Repoint the notebooks/ links in quickstart.md to the new Examples section.
